GALA

GALA stands for the Global Academy of Liberal Arts. They are one big creative, global, education family, connected by different people in different Universities around the world, spreading and sharing ideas for staff and students.
During our trip we linked up with Stockholm Universities (Stockholms Universitet) Fashion Studies Department to find out what they do and how they do it.
Fashion Studies at Stockholm University is an in depth, fascinating affair, giving students a core understanding of the wider cultural elements that inform fashion. It is a very academic approach to fashion, which pulls on theories and methods from humanities and social sciences to help students really understand what fashion is about and where it has come from historically and culturally, with it's graduates moving into roles in journalism and marketing or staying on to undertake an MA.
It was an insightful and fascinating visit, and although the new Bath Spa University, Fashion and Businesses BA degree's will have a very different feel, the cultural understanding of fashion is just as important to understand.

Based in the Film Institute, Fashion Studies students are close to the city centre, with their own quite space for contemplation and development. To finish off our Stockholm University visit, we jumped on the T-Bana and visited the English department on the main campus.
The feel of the main campus is very similar to Bath Spa University (minus the livestock). Green, peaceful and space to think.

The cultural and educational approaches of both Universities are very similar, with focuses on Innovation, Creativity and Sustainability. Fingers crossed, we will be working together in the future, so watch this space!
